Diesel in a petrol isn't such a big thing but petrol in a diesel can cause loads of problems as petrol is a solvent and will clean any lubricants from where they should be, and could start degrading any seals that it contacts
If you ever accidently put petrol in a diesel and realise don't run your engine, and hopefully it won't cause any/much damage
Diesel in petrol, just thoughly flush it out, engine won't run right for a while after

Small quantities (say less than 10%) you will get away with it provided you top up promptly with the correct fuel (If it's petrol consider a tank of super instead of regular for the first)
If it's more then a petrol car will run badly or not at all on diesel and will have to be drained and refilled. Petrol in a diesel will wreck the injection system. Expensive!!

If diesel is put into a petrol engine, the cat in the exhaust will block up, the engines electronic systems will not be able to cope with change in fuel and the engine will over a short space of time die.
If however petrol is put into a diesel engine the engine will die very quickly as there will be no lubrication to the pistons resulting in a major re-build.

Because of the different chemical composition of the fuels the working parts of each ICE differs in it's running protocol. The petrol internal combustion engine uses a carburettor with jets which mixes the more liquid petrol with air to make the new mixture more inflammable. Diesel blocks the jets. Consequently, petrol in a diesel engine is too watery to function without additives.

The petrol powered car will die and the diesel will explode and catch afire. Diesel works by compressing the fuel until it creates combustion because it has a very high burning point. Petrol, on the other hand, is much more volatile and has a lower burning point.

Absolutely nothing, provided you notice you mistake, do not start the engine, and have the car towed to the garage where you tell them what you did. They will drain the tank and get you back where you belong, and bill accordingly.
