my brother-in-law worked over there for some years. After the first visit in KSA, my sister refused to return ever again.
Brother-in-law tells the story of one of his co-workers and his wife, who was living in KSA with him in company housing. This couple are from Pakistan, educated, and are Muslim.
The wife was miserable and wanted her husband to quit and return home. Despite poorer wages, she liked their previous posting in one of the ex-Soviet -Stans much better. Said she was essentially locked up in KSA and had no freedoms. In 'Stan, by contrast, she had a local driver, shopped on her own, and attended mosque on holy days even though her husband was at work.
{oil drilling goes on 24/7/365 -- it does not stop for even the most important of holy days.}

My parents lived in Saudi Arabia. My Mom said it wasn't too bad, but she had a driver and household staff. Plus she got to leave the country a couple of times a month. But she said it would have been pretty bad if you aren't well off.
