I think it is a fruit cause it smells sweet. I found it at a park in reno Nevada. The tree was pretty tall and there were many of these fruits on the ground. It looks to me like a brain with bumps all over it. It is about the size of a medium size apple and some were larger. There are small wirery hairs sticking out of it all over. The inside is juicy and sweet smelling with seeds within. Is this a edible fruit or not?
I can take a picture of it if needed. I brought one home with me.

It's called Ugly Fruit (really!), and yes, it's edible. But. I'd have reservations about eating anything from a public park. They are notorious for using all manner of toxic sprays. If you are determined to give it a try and the local stores don't carry the fruit, ask the park commissioner for info and permission. At least that way, if you get sick, you can blame them! :)
