My fish floats at the top of the tank. It's not upside down, so it's not dead yet, but even when it moves away from the other fish, it ends up floating right back to the top. What's happening?

The fish just started acting like this. Previously, it was swimming around the tank just like the other fish.

There's a possibility that this is swim bladder. It's a very common disease where a fish usually swims in an unusual way (depending on it's species of course), or if the fish just gives up and sinks/floats. The swim bladder is supposed to maintain the fish's balance, but when there's something wrong with it, it's harder for the fish to swim at all, and it gets tired out too quickly. There's nothing that you can really do for your fish, now, sorry to say, but you can always go out and find some type of medicine for it in the fish department in case another fish of yours gets it, and this time you'll be prepared to heal it.

What kind of fish is it? Depending on species, some fish need a push, sort of, to get them active. If the water in your tank(bowl) is still, it might have an effect as to why your fish is also not moving or doing much. You can also check, to see if your fish might be a bit sick. You can tell by the way its fins are(torn or scratched) or dicoloration on its body of it you notice scales are missing alot and such. If this is the case, he might have some desease that you don't know about. Try cleaning out the tank very good, and buy some medication for common illness that may attack fish. Too much alge also might get the fish in the mood its in and also have the possibiliy of illness. So make sure you clean your tank regularly.

Your fish most likely has a swim bladder issue, which could be something as benign as a little air trapped in there, to something as serious as a loss of ability to regulate it. Try feeding him 1/2 a thawed frozen pea and see if that helps him defecate, as the most common cause of this problem is constipation from too much food or too rich a diet. Other than that you just have to wait it out, don't stress him further by moving him to an isolation tank or anything like that, just give him time.

Are you sure it's dying? I have a fish tank at the place I work and we have a few fish that just float on the top of the tank. We even have on that floats upside down.

Its swim bladder and if the fish is a goldfish then its the second worse disease for goldfish. It can be caused by poor water conditions (high level of ammonia, and/or nitrite), from overfeeding, internal bacteria/parasite infection, or feed the wrong food (vegetarian eat too much meat = constipation and vice visa except for omnivores). If the problem stays too long, it may become permanent. Quickly go to the LFS and buy medicine.

Also get some frozen green peas, thaw them, remove the skin, squash them, then feed them to your fish for one whole day with 3 meals (For Goldfish: feed they for next 3 days). The peas helps them from constipation BIG TIME and should be fed at least once a week or with other vegetable.

Every time my goldfish has problem controlling his balance, I feed him peas and the next day he's A-O-K. Never had time problem with tropical but research shows me its the same reason.

your fish has swim bladder if you can seperate the fish into a tank with a filter and air circulation.
Start the fishes treatment A.S.A.P.
either with aquarium salt or with Interpets NO: 13 Swim bladder treatment.
This is all you can do really, if caught early the fish will survive
