My heater wasn't working and I took it to the shop. They said the only thing they could find wrong was I was low on fluid so I should check it, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that.

There is no radiator cap. You have a closed system, after car sat overnight (cold) check the (recovery bottle for proper level (usually a line saying cold) then a inexpensive (coolant checker with colored bbs to determine protection level at very cold levels) ie -40 f or -17 c etc....(checker less than 10$ at your favorite auto parts store) if you have to add a little ask for help in getting the right coolant, like color etc......AS far as your heater prob. check to see if the blend door is opening when the heater is in the hot mode and blower motor is on. also look at temp guage,1/3 to 1/2 or in middle of COLD/HOT

On a Taurus and Mercury Sable the actual radiator cap is located right beside the windshield washer fill pipe on the right forward side inner-fender. The large cap is black with an orange stripe running across the top. It has serrated finger grips around the top. It unscrews from the top of the coolant recovery reservoir. The reservoir is pressurized just like the rest of the cooling system. The cap on the top is the pressure cap.

That's where you fill the cooling system.

alot of the new cars out their dont have a cap their just hooked right to the water fill tank - its easyer to when in doubt fill it like its low - winter weather is soon here which brings cold so fill your radiator as the norm for the car and your location to be safe and dont over flow it.
