There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG the best of all the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software

You may also want to scan for any possible spyware

Here is a list of some free ANTI-SPYWARE programs.
Adaware is probably the most popular. I suggest using the spyware doctor in the Google Pack and one other. Its good to run two anti-spywares even if some extra resources are taken,

Anti-Spyware for a cost.
Personally I bought Webroot's Spysweeper, their product is great and well worth the money. Watch Best Buy ads because sometimes it goes on sale for $10 to $15.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

My express copy and control lol. Ignore the first spyware section.
Malware deletion http://www.runscanner.net/listprocess.aspx?l=l
Scroll Below to see protection
Search and Destroy - Below 5000 threats detected
Spyware Blaster - Outdated
Spyware Terminator - Additional Protection but File-crazy asking, and Below 7000 threats
Maxion Spy Killer - Unknown
McAfee Anti-spyware - Horrible
Ad-Aware Personal/Pro - Pretty Good but 47% of spyware go undetected
Commodo Anti-Malware - LOL my game is an anti-malware?
PestPetrol -Ok
XoftSpy - LOL! , really funny but sorry not it
Spyware Doctor - Professional, and good immunizer, but not free,
AVG - Eh..pretty limited in features but good
Trend Micro - Unknown
Webroot Spy Sweeper- Some people like, some hate, but scans the most.
Yahoo's Anti-Spy - Slow scanner and below 1000 sectors.
Windows Defender - Slow scanner, obselete, recommanded by professionals because..uh .. they never tried it or just don't know
SuperAntiSpyware - Sorry, might look like it has alot of features but it's just basic, and commonlike like other free anti spywares.
AntiSpyware - Bogus
RegCure - Bogus
Windows Cleaner - Bogus
Efn4 - Bogus
Other Anti-Spyware : Ineffective AND REMOVE IT.

Bitdefender - Don't know but proven effective
Kaspersky - Lots of bad experiences but good scan and sectors found, and is popular
ESET Nod32 - Excellent
Trend Micro - Costly
F-Secure - Unknown
McAfee Enterprise 8.5i +, Great but scanning time takes too long and is for advanced users such as port functions
AVG Anti-Virus Pro - Ok, but limited scanning
Northon Anti-Virus - Maybe Major, but not good due to its weekly updates.
CA Anti-virus - Unknown
Norman Virus Control - Not Certified
Panda - Below Top 15

These two free AV program have a better detection rate than AVG & work on vista: (only use one)

These free anti spyware program are recommanded by many, but cannot be compared to others (below 10000 sectors scanned or threats known)

And don't subscribe, don't download without real-time scanning or know the site is safe. Surf with caution as you (assumption) are a novice user. And set your firewall to custom protection. Free protection is advisable to be inefficient at certain times due to the lack of people that use it and updates are slow, or lack of funding, or the company isn't commited to such free products like Commodo Firewall (It blocks over 97% firewall leaks).

Watch out for spam, hoaxes, bogus software, malware, rootkit, trojan, backdoors, worms, viruses, malicious codes, file sharing, remote unauthorized access, wierd error messages, hardware malfunctions, scams and scums, dialers in spyware, drones of hackers and other things to worry about.

Microsoft's stuff if pretty much obselete in many ways, even through they own Windows Vista and that..
