I must take my grandchild with me in a stroller to do my errands. I do appreciate the people who help me by opening those heavy doors or holding them open until I can get through with that awkward stroller. It's been interesting to see who will hold a door open for us.
Here is the results of my own survey:
First place goes to African-American men. They have the very best manners.
Last place goes to people who are talking on their cell phones. They are a rude, self-centered bunch and will let the door slam in your face.

Yes Doxie, I've learned that "backing thru the door" trick too!

I was leaving a crafts store with my arms full when a man and his little girl opened the door to come in. Guess who held the door for me...the darling little girl. She was probably about 8 years old. Her father just barged right on through without a word, so rude. I thanked her and really wanted to say something to him but I didn't. Someone taught her good manners. I don't think it was her father.

I use a scooter and most people will go out of there way to open the door for me, but one day a lady with a stroller was trying to get out the door, I held the door for her altho there was a 20+ year old female behind her who proceeded out the door and went on her way without offering to help me..I was left to juggle the scooter through the door I was trying to keep open..until a teenage boy grabbed the door and remarked that the 20+ lady had absolutely no class.

When I am pushing my dad in his wheel chair, someone has always held to door open for us. Guess we are lucky there. As far as the cell phone people go, that might apply to some of them, but not all. The reason I say that is because I have been on my cell phone a few times going threw a door and someone right behind me and I still hold the door open for them. I just can't be rude to other folks. You see I believe in treating other folks the way I want to be treated.

I belong to a large gym on the West coast and men (young, old, every ethnicity) are always holding the door open for me. Some women will and some will just let the door close if it means they have to hold it for more than a few seconds. When I'm out in other public places it's 50/50. I think the people at the gym realize they will see you regularly so they are more courteous.

I find if my arms are full I just have to make eye contact and smile and the door is held open for me about 99.9% of the time. I open the door for people with strollers, shopping carts, their arms are full, etc and always hold the door until the person behind me has taken hold of it.
My kids used to gripe that when they hold the door open for someone they would sail through without even saying thank you to them -- a little courtesy from both sides of the issue goes a long way to someone holding a door for the next person they encounter.
I said to a woman once "you should say thank you when someone opens and holds a door for you" when my son had, and she stuck her nose in the air and sailed through like she was the queen of something.

I have noticed that the young people of today have no manners in this area AT ALL! My mother would turn over in her grave if she saw me doing what these people do and don't do.
I ride a shuttle bu every day from the parking lot to work ~ 5 blocks and some of these guy almost push women young or older aside to get on first.
I held a door for a women with a stroller and a boy who was about 5 yo going into McDonalds. I told him, "Next time, you hold the door for your mom." On the way out, HE DID!! And he felt proud to do it.
GOOD vent! Thanks.

I always hold the door open for people and I find that most people hold the door open for me. Maybe it's a difference in where we live.
I feel especially happy when a little kid does it because it shows they are already thinking of others and displaying some good manners. That can take you far in life, those simple things.
I would gladly hold the door open for you.

People who are walking out ahead of me or older gentlemen get the door for me. I have learned to open the door with my back then turn the stroller around and go out the door, it helps.

Good for those who were kind enough for you. A group of us were heading in our office after lunch, the new woman came up behind us, I opened the door for her and she opened the other door saying, "I open my own door." Didn't even look at us. I'd have to say it's rude "ladies" like this who ruin it for everyone else. At least I hope not all women think like her today.

When in the south the men have so much courtesy. I will always help open the door for a mom or senior with a cane or walker.
