I predicted before the season that Philly would have a great year. I predicted before the season that NJ would suck and not make the playoffs, those don't surprise me. However; the Blue Jackets are the most surprising team I think. The most disappointing team has to be the Penguins. I was picking them to win the Presidents trophy, they'd better turn things around soon.

Well, I am playing favorites if I say Columbus is a surprise, but it is impossible to not mention them in this discussion. We're all surprised here in Columbus as well. They really didn't add much in the offseason, just Peca, yet they are giving teams a lot of problems and currently sit with the third or fourth best record in the NHL. It's easy to say Philly, but Boston has also improved a lot thus far. They finished 13th in the East last year and they are sitting at 5th right now. Pretty impressive without Thornton. Most surprising (in my opinion): Blue Jackets and Bruins
Buffalo and New Jersey are disappointing, but I also think you can include Anaheim or Nashville. However, when you lose your best scorer in Paul Kariya or lose Teemu Selanne to retirement, how can the Predators or Ducks expect to repeat last year's success without picking up some other major talent to replace them? So they may not be "surprise disappointments." Same with the Sabres and Devils. They both lost a lot of talent in the offseason.
Ultimately, the Rangers added some good players and still haven't been able to score a ton of goals like they should. With all the talent on offense and the goaltending they have, they should be dominating. And after Atlanta's run last year, they should have been able to compete this season as well. So my votes for most disappointing go to the Rangers and Thrashers.

you cant say the Canadiens cause they always have a great start of the season, even last year they were top till December just behind the Sabres but then Huet got hurt and the rest of the team went down too. I'm a huge Habs fan and they lose allot come the middle of the season then their once again a top team at the end of the year trying to get to the playoffs, this happens every year with them. this year i knew the Flyers where going to be good they just had a really bad year last year and as for Nashville i knew they would of had a bad year from losing key players like Vocoun, Kariya, Timonen and Forsberg, and also with Anaheim not a true contender this year as they lost key players also. same goes for the Sabres and I just love it, I think the big signing of Vanek is the biggest joke this season. and if you still think the Sabres where going to be contenders again without Briere and Drury gone your dream of the Stanley Cup coming to Buffalo is over, and i still say Ryan Miller is the most overrated player in the NHL today . so this year my biggest surprise is Columbus Blue Jackets, and the biggest disappointment is New Jersey Devils. and the Canucks are just terrible also but im starting to see some little changes in their game.

I wouldn't say the Flyers are a surprise. I knew last season didn't sit well with them and they'd make the moves to get back into the playoffs. Columbus was a huge disappointment last year, so they do have the talent. I'd say the most pleasant surprise is the Blackhawks with how well rookies Kane and Toews are playing. The St. Louis Blues are playing real well also.
The biggest disappointment I'd say is the Rangers with their inability to score. They have the lack of ability to make subpar goalies look like hall of famers. Look what they did for Wade Dubliewicz of the Islanders last season. He "stoned" them in a game late in the season, which propelled Duby and the Isles to the playoff. In his one performance this year, Dubliewicz gave up 8 goals to Toronto.
I'd also say Vancouver has been disappointing, not jus the team, but also Luongo has been just average so far. Last year he started much the same way, but after Christmas was lights out, leading the Canucks to the division win.

Jackets were surprising.
Ducks were disappointing(not that thats a bad thing. lol)
<====disappointing...they're just past .500!! There is something wrong with that, especially when they created all this Stanley Cup hype. I was watching an interview with Joe Thornton and he was saying how he still had confidence in his team. I hope he has reason to, cuz right now my confidence is getting tested...Screw it, this question hit a sore spot...

It's way too early for me to get excited/disappointed about my team, but the Canadiens and Islanders have surprised me for their winning and the Thrashers and Lightning have surprised me with how poorly they are playing right now. But it is a long season.

I didn't think the avalanche would be this good, also the blues and the blackhawks both look like there getting ready to pull out of the cellar.
I think everyone expected more out of buffalo, and the maple leafs are not looking good either.

I would have to agree with awesome bill.
No one said a word about the Islanders, because they basically released their entire team, and they would be leading their division if it wasnt for the Phils.
