ANY mammal can get rabies but it is very, very rare for a small animal, like a mouse, chipmunk, rabbit or rat, to get rabies because they almost never survive being ATTACKED by the rabid animal. There is no known case of a human EVER being bitten by a rabid rat.
Possums CAN have rabies and you CAN indeed get rabies from saliva (drool) -- in fact, the saliva is what GIVES you rabies. If you have a cut on your hand (or head) and a rabid animal drools on your cut, you can get rabies.
If you even SUSPECT you could have been infected by rabies, DO NOT WAIT. It is impossible to overestimate just how DEADLY rabies is. If you get the symptoms, you are dead. PERIOD. You must be vaccinated BEFORE the first symptoms show up.
The vaccination for rabies in not nearly as painful as it was in the past. Don't hesitate -- if you are afraid you have been exposed to rabies, get vaccinated -- PLEASE.
Good luck.

Short answer is probably ;-) Vaccination right after a bite is generally very effective... vaccination after symptoms are seen is almost 100% ineffective. Rabies is able to kill because of its stealth characteristics, it is almost ignored by the canine (and human) immune systems until it is in the fatal stages. The vaccines given provoke the body to produce the appropriate antibodies which fight off the virus. I would guess she has a very good chance of survival, but I wouldn't gurantee it at 100%... That is, if she contracted rabies from the bite... she will be fine if the animal wasn't rabid... your vet might suggest a more advanced strategy for treatment (which involves more than just a single vaccine injection...) and I would go with whatever he says just to be safe... Remember, rabies is always fatal once symptoms begin.

Actually the chance of an oppossum having rabies is extremely rare.
They have a low body temperature (94-97* F) which makes it very difficult for this virus to survive in their system.
People may think an opossum has rabies when they see it drooling, swaying, hissing, etc, but this is all part of their defense method to scare away potential predators.

"What animals almost never have rabies? Rabbits, hamsters, squirrels, chipmunks, guinea pigs, gerbils, opossums, rats, and mice are hardly ever affected with rabies (Birds, fish, bugs, amphibians, & reptiles don’t get rabies either.) . You may still need a tetanus shot or other medical care if these animals bite you."
And even so, you really need to be bitten, not just drooled on.
