Checking with your local police, Polizia, Polizei, Sherf, Constabulary, whatever, will tell you if it's been REPORTED as stolen...it could be taken from somewhere and the owner not know it for months or even years. If the seller can't provide a clear title, walk away...K ;o)

Call the Police and ask them to check the VIN Number for you, if you suspect it's stolen.

Don't buy or borrow until certain; receiving stolen property is illegal whether or not you know. The police are sometimes nice about it if it can be shown that you were completely unknowledgeable about it, but a judge could be harsh if it can be shown that you might have guessed, let alone knew.
