What are some thing NOT to do.

I know there are some things that may cause birth defects but I'm not talking about that. What things do people do that cause them to lose the baby?

high fever. achololism. Cocaine. Physical trauma. being expsed to toxins. high caffeine intake. use of IUD. use of NSAIDs. genetic problems. and more below-

First trimester
Most miscarriages (more than three-quarters) occur during the first trimester.[9]

Chromosomal abnormalities are found in more than half of embryos miscarried in the first 13 weeks. A pregnancy with a genetic problem has a 95% chance of ending in miscarriage. Most chromosomal problems happen by chance, have nothing to do with the parents, and are unlikely to recur.[10] Genetic problems are more likely to occur with older parents; this may account for the higher miscarriage rates observed in older women.[11]

Another cause of early miscarriage may be progesterone deficiency. Women diagnosed with low progesterone levels in the second half of their menstrual cycle (luteal phase) may be prescribed progesterone supplements, to be taken for the first trimester of pregnancy.[10]

[edit] Second trimester
Up to 15% of pregnancy losses in the second trimester may be due to uterine malformation, growths in the uterus (fibroids), or cervical problems.[10] These conditions may also contribute to premature birth.[9]

One study found that 19% of second trimester losses were caused by problems with the umbilical cord. Problems with the placenta may also account for a significant number of later-term miscarriages.[12]

[edit] General risk factors
Pregnancies involving more than one fetus are at increased risk of miscarriage.[10]

Uncontrolled diabetes greatly increases the risk of miscarriage. Women with controlled diabetes are not at higher risk of miscarriage. Because diabetes may develop during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), an important part of prenatal care is to monitor for signs of the disease.[10]

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a risk factor for miscarriage, with 30-50% of pregnancies in women with PCOS being miscarried in the first trimester. Two studies have shown treatment with the drug metformin to significantly lower the rate of miscarriage in women with PCOS (the metformin-treated groups experienced approximately one-third the miscarriage rates of the control groups).[13] However, a 2006 review of metformin treatment in pregnancy found insufficient evidence of safety and did not recommend routine treatment with the drug.[14]

High blood pressure and certain illnesses (such as rubella and chlamydia) increase the risk of miscarriage.[10]

Tobacco (cigarette) smokers have an increased risk of miscarriage.[15] An increase in miscarriage is also associated with the father being a cigarette smoker.[2] The husband study observed a 4% increased risk for husbands who smoke less than 20 cigarettes/day, and an 81% increased risk for husbands who smoke 20 or more cigarettes/day.

Severe cases of hypothyroidism increase the risk of miscarriage. The effect of milder cases of hypothyroidism on miscarriage rates has not been established. Certain immune conditions such as autoimmune diseases greatly increase the risk of miscarriage.[10]

Cocaine use increases miscarriage rates.[15]

Physical trauma, exposure to environmental toxins [16], obesity, high caffeine intake (> 300 mg/day), high levels of alcohol consumption, high fever (100°F or higher) , use of an IUD during the time of conception [16] and use of NSAIDs have also been linked to increased risk of miscarriage.[citation needed]

All the things they tell you to avoid when you first find out that you are pregnant as well as you body doing itself because something is wrong or not quite right.

There are many reasons some can be explained like abusing your body stress or the development taking place in the F tube to something that just happened - said but true... a close friend of the family had that problem she could never get past 24weeks and the doctors could never offer a reasonable explanation

Having incompatible blood types.
Getting in fist fights or falling down flights of stairs can bring on contractions.
Taking tansy and other abortifacents (poisons) which kill the baby.
Smoking, drinking any alcohol or using any kinds of drugs, even some with prescriptions.
Cancer treatment, sometimes.
Abortion/or forcing your period to start with drugs/herbal treatments.
Diseases, like venereal and others sexually transmitted.
Those babies are IN THERE, AND MEANT TO STAY, SO BIRTH DEFECTS WILL USUALLY BE THE RESULT OF TRYING TO GET RID OF THE BABY.

You could smoke or drink or do something to a certain extent that the baby cannot cope anymore with the way you are acting/eating/drinking etc. If for example you are smoking while pregnant, the baby could run out of oxygen and suffocate. If you are drinking, the baby could be harmed by the alcohol and could either be deformed or you could lose the baby completly. If you ever get pregnant and do not want to lose the baby simply:

1. Dont smoke
2. Dont drink alcohol
3. Eat healthy foods
4. Drink water

There also could be other reasons why the baby could be lost ie getting diseases from the genes etc xxx

I would venture to say that almost nothing a person does will cause miscarriage.

One of the few things that could cause it I guess would be being intentionally kicked in the stomach, but even then, the uterus is a perfectly protective environment, and the fetus just floats around in there.

Being too active, eating the wrong foods, exposing your body to medications unsafe to the fetus, including paint etc. Miscarrrages happen all the time the mother isn't to blame, Age, genetics and God are all factors. If you are very young they are likely, same is you are very old. Genetics: miscarrages run in the family. And God: it might not be the right time for you or for the world.

Stress is a big no no in very early pregnancy, so try to not worry about anything, as hard as that can be. Be positive also. Don't do anything strenuous such as vigorous exerize or heavy lifting. Take it slow and listen to your body. Also start those prenatals!!! Best of luck to you!
