My '03 Dodge Grand Caravan (v-6) has developed an intemittent loud humming sound, mostly as I turn. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers' side front or even the steering column.

The mechanic found nothing visable. The cv joints "look" fine.

Any ideas I can bring to the mechanic to check for?

Check your power steering fluid level. Sounds like it might just need to be refilled.
Good luck. I've recently had severe mechanical problems myself; broken ball joint, broken S belt, replaced wheel cylinder, new front tires, alignment, and replaced the fuel line (it had dry rotted and burst). Luckily for me, a guy I go to church with owns a repair shop, and was willing to do the repairs and let me make payments.
Then there was my wife's car. My friend diagnosed the repairs needed, and told us that it would cost a few thousand dollars just to get it running right again, and that wouldn't even get it to where it would pass inspection. We have a new car now.

Power steering pump could be low on fluid. it could have wear, the power rack and pinion could be worn putting demands on the pump. the feel up through the steering column points to one or more of these problems.
