Make sure your battery is almost new. Cold saps the strength out of them. good snow tires all around. If it is time for it change oil filter , get transmission fluid changed. If you haven't changed the antifreeze have the system flushed by machine, that cleans it up, and check the radiator cap and have the thermostat tested or replaced , probably should change it. put together a kit in your trunk . Jumper cables , flares, extra anti freeze and oil, a heavy blanket, spare serpentine belt or change the one on the car. good flashlights, not a rechargeable. candy bars or trail mix ,some bottled water. Keep your cell phone charged and have a car cellphone charger in the car. This will get you safe and makes the car more dependable. It sounds like a lot to have done, but you don't want to walk either.

I am seeing some good answers in this question..Being in canada I am aware of what winter can bring..here is what I would add to the list

either a good set of all season tires,or a set of winters.traction is key during a storm.

I always change my wipers in the fall before winter comes. You can opt for winter wipers ..or a good set of all season wipers.

When you move there find a reputable shop and ask them for a winterization package in which they will check the car over and make recomendations for you.

hopefully between all of our answers we have helped you a little

I would flush and fill ALL fluids, and get an emergency roadside kit. Also toss an old blanket in the trunk. Your question is kinda vague since you didn't specify from what state to what state, but if you were in florida and now moved to illinois you car may not last long. it all depends on how you have taken care of your car and how lucky you get.

get windshield washer fluid that works well below 0, wiperblades, make sure tires have good tread, windshield scraper, I would also take the battery to autozone or napa and make sure it's good, batteries sold in the south are made different than batteries made for the cold climates
