Many birds lost thier wintering grounds and will have to move on to other areas that will already be populated by other birds meaning more competition for food and shelter. Some of these may not survive as a result of this since food sources are low in the winter to began with.

Just like the people and all the other animals. If they could escape the flames, they made life as best they could in another place. Many animals do not successfully escape the fires and die. Birds seem to since bodies of birds are seldom found after a fire.
