My water line is 2 1/2 feet below ground and high risk of freezing. I have been pulling the foot valve from well to let the water drain backwards from cottage but this is a pain becase the line is very stiff and hard to deal with. I was thinking about digging down beside the well to the water line and putting a T and a valve on---then in the fall I could open the valve and apply some air pressure from inside to push all the water out. The cottage is 100 feet down grade to the well.

You will need to loosen a fitting somewhere on the line near the well. Hard to say without knowing the layout.

Can't really say without knowing your setup. Is the pump in your cottage? Or is it at the well? Is it shallow wellpump, or convertible pump? Or submersible? How do you know there is a footvalve?
