How can transfer a witch hazel tree from the wild to my yard without dying?

I killed quite a few in Virginia before I got one to live. Seems most trees have one root for every branch, not so with W Hazel, two roots for every branch. Dig a large root ball and prune at least 30% of the branches. The other thing is to plant it in the shade and use lots of soil and leaves from the area it was dug. RScott

Autumn and early winter are the best times to transplant any tree. I would suggest finding a small one and dig up the largest root ball you possibly can. This will reduce the stress on the plant. In the case of transplanting trees, bigger IS NOT better!

I would be more concerned about killing the tree than dying.
