Great question.
LAN is a term that can mean both wired or wireless. LAN is not synonymous with physically connected connections only. =)
Here are some highlights/ differences: To use wired ethernet you need cables (usually CAT5) and network adapters for each computer. Wireless doesnt need cabling, just a wireless router and wireless network cards for each pc.
Advantages: Setting up a wired connection can be costly over wireless. BUT... you get more stability in the connection that it is less affected by obstructions. On the otherhand youre stuck with wired. You can go places with wireless, say move from the office room to the kitchen.
The speed? I've used both. The wired LAN is preferrable. Because its stable. How much speed is divided. Depends. On the connection you got. It may be cable or dsl upto 512Kbps or more. But both wired and wireless should be able to support it up to 100Mbps. (Given of course there's a provider in your area). =)

Local Area Network or LAN would be defined as a network convering a small area as in an office or house. WLAN or Wireless Local Area Network would be defined as the same only over Wifi. The bandwidth or "speed" would be used or divied out depending on what your doing on the network, I.e. downloading music/files or siimple web surfing. Most your residential throughput or "speed" will be 2-10Mps so if you have an average connection the over all "speed" will max out at your total bandwidth. Of course in theory the max speed over wireless is 54Mps youll never pull that rate. But nativly there isnt a divider of sorts that will split up the signal but your fastes speed will be your direct connection to your network (direct connection)

I wish I had Fredreck's network equipment. A wireless router will typically run at speeds of 54mb/sec instead of 54G/sec. Also, if you are connecting more than one pc to a wireless they will split the connection if they are both sending data at the same time. (Ex. 2 computers = 27mb/sec, 3 computers = 18mb/sec) A local area connection is, as others have already said your hardwired connection.

Local area connection is directly cabled to the server source from your computer to the phone line or cable line via a modem. Wireless connection is hooking up to a modem by air waves and usually at 54g vs. 100g direct.
