Get a hotel room and go to dinner. You deserve it! You need a change of scenery I am sure!

I think it's the things that don't cost that much that are sometimes the best. I have done a few things for my husband that have turned out really well.
You can pack a picnic and a blanket and go somewhere nice. I always go to the top of the mountain with my husband and we have a picnic overlooking the valley.
If it's not too cold where you live you can send the kids to a friends house for the night and go to a campground. Camping in a tent is cheap and you will be forced to keep each other warm throughout the nigh (it might help to pack an air mattress in addition to sleeping bags).
Also, you could cook a nice dinner at home, go to a movie and then tell him right when the movie is almost over that he's getting dessert when he gets home. He'll def. be looking forward to that.
I have found that state parks offer a lot of things to do and most of them are free. Also, most state parks have a lot of trees and with the season changing the leaves look really pretty and it's the perfect backdrop for a romantic walk and nice pictures.
Lots of places have light shows for Christmas and those are fun. I take my husband to Calloway Gardens every year and it's usually pretty cold so we have to snuggle up to each other.
There is a lot to do and you'd be surprised what you'd find in the newspaper about upcoming events and online.
Pretty much anything that you want to do and consider romantic will not be able to involve the kids.
Have fun!

Here is one I have used to advantage from time to time. Send the lovely little people off to stay with a grandparent, aunt, uncle, long lost second cousin 20x removed....ooops-LOL anyway get them elsewhere for a night, set up a nice romantic "scene" whatever you like really, my fave is an arabian nights look but that is just me, make a "finger-foods" type dinner, don an outfit that makes you feel sexy and feminine. Greet him at the door, draw a bath for him, etc etc, feed each other dinner while enjoying good music and then just go with the flow.
Being together and having fun doesn't mean that you have to go out and spend a lot of money on bad food and bad entertainment.

Drive in – went up the canyon with blankets and snacks and a laptop and watched a DVD. This is a tradition now. (It would be fun for the kids too, if you ever want to include them.)
Any kind of a themed dinner. Get decorations like sombreros and plastic margarita glasses from a party store and play Mexican music and have taco night, or Italian, or whatever. You can make it as romantic as you want. If you have a balcony or patio and weather permitting, put up patio lights and string white Christmas lights on the trees… it makes for a romantic setting for dinner.
Play Trick or Treat (after the kids are in bed) Dress up in something sexy and knock on the bedroom door as a surprise. My wife did this for me and I had no idea she was up to anything. It was a ton of fun.
For her bridal shower, my wife got a bunch of kinky games, like dice and things. We pull those out on occasion and they’re kind of fun.
Just a few things my wife and I have done. Have fun!

If you have a baby sitter who will take the kids to their house, you've got it made. Make or buy dinner (makes no difference), put on some nice dress clothes, light some candles, turn down the lights, & put on some nice music. Forget about being parents & be people! Romantic people who are in love!! It's important to make the time to be romantic...
The most romantic dinner I ever had was Ramen noodles, colored water in wine glasses, candles, & flowers that he picked for me. (We were terribly broke!) It's the thought that counts, always!

Get friends or family members to take the kids over night, then you make a very romantic dinner for just the 2 of you. candle light, soft music, put on some really nice smelling perfume, & a outfit that will knock his socks off, & greet him at the door in it. Oh I am sure things will go real good from there, & throughtout the rest of the night.....

send the kids with grandma/pa, aunt/uncle or a good friend. hard to party with a limited income. then splurge a little and order something nice for dinner..depending on his favorite foods, most restraunts will deliver or you can pick it up...set the mood in the house, candles all over, and especially the bathroom, draw a nice bubble bath for 2, etc..and enjoy.
inexpensive but very romantic.
congratulations for 8 yrs. and loving him enough to want to make it special
good luck
