I would like to hear ideas on pets that can live comfortably in glass habitat, but also is a low maintence animal for a five year old. Also, an animal that doesn't get to grow too large in size, I would like something that stays relatively the same size.

Apparentely people didn't read your question very carefully before answering.
You asked for LOW maintenance. I'm sure you know a puppy is in no way low maintenance.
It sounds like you're a goldfish person. You feed them and clean the tank once in a while. Anything else is going to require more daily maintenance, even if it's just refilling water.
Another possibility is a hermit crab.
You need to be prepared to take care of it. You can't assume a 5 year old will remember to check it every day.
If the child is responsible feeding it and keeping it supplied with water, then maybe go more complicated.

I would recommend a small reptile, such as a Leopard Gecko. They are small, clean, easy to care for, and very docile. They will just lay there and will not take a bite out of your child's arm. On the other hand, you could consider a female fancy rat. I know a rat may seem like an odd pet, but they are very sweet and intelligent. They are very social animals and are the least likely to bite out of the rodent family. They do not take too much effort, but I would get 2 if you won't be able to socialize with the pet because they are social animals. Nonetheless, these animals still take some effort to care for. So, if you are not wanting to have an animal that requires as much effort, you could always get a turtle, fish, or some good ole' Sea Monkeys!! They sure amused me when I was around that age! Hope this helps you out, and good luck on your animal hunting!!

Normally I advise that you get an adult dog, fairly large, from a shelter that really knows it's animals.
If you want something smaller that can live comfortably in a glass habitat I think you're probably stuck with a fish.
I have two grandson's who live on our farm with their parents and my husband and I. They have a betta that they both help take care of and they are 4 and 19 months. They also have 2 large dogs, lab and setter, plus play with my dog, a small hairy crossbred. The 4 year old also rides his pony and plays with and shows his own goat. They enjoy my parrot but I don't let them get too close.
So... the proper pet for a 5 year old is one that YOU enjoy taking care of because a 5 year old with an attentive parent can get along very well with most any pet!

do NOT get a rabbit, hamster, guinea pig gerbil ect because they loose interest soooo quick and handle them to aggresivly! the best bet is a small dog from a local shelter with a good temperment that can put up with pulibng of tails ect! If your house can then chickens are great, very low maintence, funny to watch, dont need TOO much room and your child will be sooo happy when she lays her first egg! if you cant keep chickens then sorry but their isnt such a pet
hope i helped

NONE. A 5-year old is not ready for the responsibility. Even 10-year olds require constant monitoring. As the parent, YOU are the one legally and morally responsible for the welfare of the animal. Don't get one simply to entertain your 5-year old or because he or she whines for one. Children have short attention spans and are notoriously fickle. And an animal is NOT a toy! They are living beings with their own needs, feelings, and preferences. In effect, it's somewhat like adopting another child. A pet is entitled to water, food, shelter, and medical care BY LAW. Can you afford a pet? Will you make the time and effort to take him/her to the vet? The fact that you haven't done your homework is also a concern. You don't even know what species, let alone what breed!

No, this is not the time. Don't you have enough to do running after a 5-year old?!

A hamster or gerbil. But you shouldn't put all the responsibility on the child. You will need to take on some if it and be prepared for the child to loose interest. So only get a pet that you like and would be willing to look after.

A puppy. Get a breed that goes well with children. Your local vet or adoption centers could help you on this one. Preferably also, a female because they have maternalistic tendencies that could translate to love for your child. A German shepherd is good. I have an Australian sheep dog (which is good for the hot climate I live in) me and the wife adopted for my son when he was only 2 yrs old. My son has a good friend in the dog who is very protective of my son. He is now 16 yrs old and considers the dog as a member of the family which she definitely is. Of course you have to house train the dog in the early years but the effort would be well worth it in the latter years.

the only puppy i might believe a newborn that youthful with may be a filled one. Any stay animal ought to be what you individually prefer to guard, with the aid of fact a 5 365 days previous newborn should not be feeding the animal and cleansing up its poop each and all the time. Plus you are the guy who has to purchase each and every thing the animal desires and take it to the vet while that desires to be achieved, for something of that animal's existence. Pets are no longer for toddlers. they're for adults who're mature sufficient to offer each and every thing the puppy desires even while they could sacrifice their own needs, and understand what's and isn't any longer secure for the puppy, and save everybody interior the kin secure. you may (could, actually) teach the newborn concerning to the animal's desires and supervise their playtime, yet you may no longer anticipate lots interior the way of suitable care from a newborn that youthful.

Mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils.. Pretty much anything that YOU are willing to care for. Even the most mature of 5 year olds isn't ready for the entire responsibility of caring for a pet yet.

I would say a rat. They're like mini dogs. You can train them and they'll know who you are and come up and beg for attention. And I've worked at a pet store and the rats are the tamest rodent that you can get. And they're very clean. They also only live 2 years on average.
