it doesn't hold in the amniotic fluid cause the minute you lose the mucous plug your water would break. and you can lose your mucous plug up to 2 weeks before delivery. it is a plug that covers the opening to the cervix and uterus to keep out bacteria and germs. and as your cervix starts to thin out and dialate it will fall out then thats when you have to start being careful like not taking baths and making sure your partners penis is clean before intercourse. and you probably haven't heard of it because no one really talks about it not even doctors. and most women don't even know when they have lost it cause unless you are looking for it you won't notice when you do lose it. hope this answers your question.

Basically it plugs up your cervix to protect the womb (and baby) from infection whilst pregnant, sealing it as a 'safe' environment. It comes away during labour - you may or may not notice it and this is called a 'show' which you may have heard of in pregnancy books. It may be clear or it may be blood coloured jelly like substance (if you wanted a description!).

It's what is at the opening of your cervix that holds in the amniotic fluid, when you lose it you are getting ready to give birth soon.

Its between your cervix and the bag of waters. Its a big chunk of snotty stuff. You usually dont hear about it until you're pregnant :)
