We depend on oil here in the U.S. We need gasoline to get to our jobs, and to transport products all over the country. If OPEC feels they have the right to keep oil prices high, why don't we have the right to make them pay high prices for food? Maybe we should let them eat sand and drink their oil.

Many things are wrongly conceived by you! The cost of supply versus demand is a business theory what America teaches the world, as market economy to be followed in a democratic state! The whole gamut of millions of business transactions, everyday in the USA is based on the market economic principles and the policies of the US government only!
Since US needs oil, it has to pay for it as per supply and demand theory only! In a competitive purchase or bidding, if the USA does not fall in line with the sellers forum namely the OPEC, then US will be only the looser, while others could bid better than US to take away the oil!
The right measures are thus:
1) Reduce dependence on oil for everything
2) Develop oil conservation techniques, nationwide, for all industries and the usage of motor vehicles
3) Develop alternate fuels including bio-diesel etc
4) Electric power driven and solar power driven vehicles are to be made in large scale for utility
5) Oil is needed for energy use and hence all the end use of oil can be studied for change / modifications for conserving the oil.
Each measure and practice of oil conservation will go in the long way to reduce import of oil and our dependence!
The energy crisis is now terrible in the 21st Century and America does not have concrete plans to manage things when the crisis blows out!

Now to the second part, if the USA try to charge more for the food they supply (which is a highly competitive field and to even export the agro commodities, USA gives a huge subsidy to their Agriculturists! This is also highly condemned by all the developing countries who are demanding withdrawal of all farm subsidies by USA!
If the United States does overcharge for its food supplies, then nations like Canada, Argentina, India and many more can supply the same at less than the cost of USA! We are unfortunate that the other side namely the oil side, we do not have suppliers who can supply at low cost than what OPEC has finalized!
Asking them to eat sand and drink oil is really bad since America DICTATES PRICES FOR INUMERABLE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES OF EMPORTS TO DEVELOPING AND UNDER DEVELOPED NATIONS AND ALSO DICTATES PRICES FOR ALL OTHER IMPORTS FROM THE SAME NATIONS!

I am with johnny b on this one.

While I would love to spit it back in their faces it is not really going to work. Just like boycotts hurt OPEC in the 70's blackmailing them will backfire on us.

Let us not get mad, but get even.

Brazil was able to get away from its oil addiction and now all their cars run on ethanol from sugar cane produced domestically.

We need to work on alternatives so we do not need their damn oil.

Um, honey, the USA doesnt export much food anymore. Most food in the Middle East is imported from China, SE Asian, grown in the middle East, Europe and Turkey.

The USA doesnt export much of anything anymore. We are service based economy now.

although that would be a nice slap back in their face that they deserve, what they would do is find food to buy from other nations. we lose out on the sale.
