I was working at a community college in california for about 6 months. My last month working there was three months ago. Long story short, the payroll clerk did not send my final payroll slip to the main payroll office until about a month and a half ago. I call the payroll office daily to find out any information about when I will be receiving my final check. The woman is always busy, or hasnt heard anything, or she'll call me back, which never happens. My question is what can I do? It isn't very much money, only about 300 dollars. Can I file a complaint to a state board or to a better business bural or anything? Would it be worth taking legal actions or will it cost more that not getting it. I'm a college student and I cannot afford to drive back and forth to the school, it's about 70 miles away from my home, to hassel the people nor can I afford very much time but I don't want them getting away with this or doing it to another student.

Contact the Labor Board. You can find their website on any search engine by entering labor board and the state you are in. Directions to filing a claim will be on their website. The board will then contact the business about your pay. If you still do not receive the check take them to small claims court and add attorney fees and court costs into the amount that you are owed, in that case legal action will not cost you anything! Good luck! I have gone through the same problem.

If the payrole slip has finally been sent in to the payrole office, you should be recieving your check soon. You could call to verify that this has occurred and it is not rude or unseemly of you to ask about how long this payment will take getting to you. You could file a small claims suit, but will probably be paid before the case gets to court. Filing a lawsuit using a lawyer will cost far more than the amount you are waiting for.

Every college has a president. Send him a letter briefly telling him that you have tried to resolve this issue but have gotten nowhere and you would like to give him 10 days before you notify the labor board. I'll bet you get things taken care of.
