I would put the Spanish Empire of Philip II up against any other empire for it's breadth of coverage. It's the first empire upon which the sun never set.

The Ottoman Empire was large but the largest to date was the Macedonian Empire under Alexander the Great. Extended from the Mediterranean Sea to India and the Far East. It also went south into Africa and north into parts of modern day Germany.
