There's no doubt it was a boneheaded decision, but keep in mind the board of directors for the NHL approved it. At least it looks as though it's all about to change:

Bill
The schedule has nothing to do with Bettman
Teams have been playing teams in their own division 8x since 1980-81 (for a few years in the late 90s, they played one team 9x).

Some of us grew up seeing teams play one another 14x a season.

The owners 'claim' they can't afford the travel required to play every team at least once a year AND keep their conference games.

In one month, there will be a new schedule system in place where each team will play each team at least once per year. However, some teams want the extra games to be removed from their conference schedule and NOT their division schedule (all the Canadian teams want to retain 8 games against their division rivals because all the canadian teams are concentrated in two divisions as well as teams like Detroit, Boston, and Los Angeles).

Personally, I want an 87 game schedule where every team plays every team 3x each. And the top 16 teams make the playoffs, and team 16 plays team 1, etc.

I feel that the top 2 teams, regardless of where they are, should play for the Stanley Cup.

He's all about teams playing teams in their division. By the time a team plays each team in its division 8 times and every other team in the conference, there goes most of the games in a season. They would have to change the rules of the top three teams to make the playoffs being division winners if they played people in they're division yet. It sucks but it makes the most sense. The only possible solution would be to add more games, which would make the already long NHL playoffs, even longer. That would be my guess.

Its Bettman and the owners idea of creating regional rivals. Its worked out poorly.

My idea
- Add 2 games (84 total)
- Play each division team 6 times (3 home/3 road)
- Play each conference team 4 times (2 home/2 road)
- Play teams from 2 divisions in the other conference 2 times (1 home/1 road) and rotate the divisions yearly like the NFL.

It is one of the many changes in the new NHL, and loads of hockey fans are disgruntled over it. The origional six teams are especially mad over it since many traditional rivalries have been snuffed out simply because the teams never get to face each other (sans Detroit v. Toronto). A lot of people are also bitter that their favorite teams never get to face up with kids like Ovechkin and Crosby.

In hockey the game is played quickly everywhere but in Bettman's office. He'll come around eventually and come up with a better system.

I guess that is what we get when the owners hired a basketball lawyer/dwarf. To run (mean ruin) the league.
The owners must feel we will support them no matter what they do to us ( and being Canadian we have to support hockey). So it will continue until somebody (meaning the fans) actually do something all together. Maybe we should have our own collusion and for 1 night nobody go or watch any games.
OK I know that will never happen, so I guess we get to be what it really means to be Canadian and do nothing about it!

Because he likes to make us suffer by having our team playing the same team over and over and over and over again. I mean, this month, the Sharks are playing only their division!! I think its the same with the rest of the pacific division. Talk about lack of variety.
