What is the easiest way to find the make and model of your motherboard? is there any software which can tell you info on the main components of your computer or is it something as simple to be identified in the bios or on startup?

the easiest way would be to open up your computer, second would be download a program called CPU-Z, this will tell you all the information about your computer including the motherboard make, model and bios versions.

just google CPU-Z

You can open up the computer to see the manufacturer of your board, sometimes the model is next to the name, but usually you will find this in the BIOS.
Since you mentioned BIOS I am assuming you have a PC. To find out the components on the comp, right click on the My Comp icon, click properties, click the hardware tab, click device manager, here you will see all the stuff in your comp. Click on each item and it will tell you what the display adapter, network card, etc. is in your comp.

with more and more p.c,s needing repair then more and more diagnostic programs are being developed and these will inform you on all the components in your p.c,including your motherboard
one such program is SiSoftware Sandra XII (2008) from http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=&location=downandbuy&langx=en&a=

this program provides comprehensive and easy to understand information about your system configuration. It can show hardware configuration, video-card information, OS details, list of running processes and other information. The information can be saved as a file and sent to technical support. And it's absolutely FREE.
finally EVEREST Ultimate Edition from http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&ps=UE&lang=en is an industry leading system diagnostics and benchmarking solution for enthusiasts PC users, based on the award-winning EVEREST Technology. Nothing's better than opening the pc and actually looking at the mobo.

However, that's not always easy to do.

Belarc Advisor is a small program, with a simple interface - it puts all the data into your web browser.
