I don't consider within the pledge of allegiance. It is a pledge to a work of fabric, now not the nation. The charter is an old-fashioned record. It used to be an overly strong and innovative piece while it used to be written. However time has marched on but we nonetheless use an old-fashioned record. Donna

I believe in the original pledge of allegiance
" I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"
It's merely a call of unity all the ravages of the civil war, so that we don't tear each apart again in bloodshed. Every adjustment made after that weakened the unity and universality of the original pledge.

Take out the part about pledging to the flag and I'll agree. I pledge allegiance to my NATION, not some piece of cloth.
What about flag boxer-briefs, or flag napkins? Do you pledge allegiance to those? NO, you pledge allegiance to the NATION.
Yeah, the flag is a "symbol" but so is the bald eagle, and we don't pledge to that!

I've always thought the Pledge was a crock, even when I was a kid and they made you say it. I'll pledge to protect my family, freinds, community, and country, but not the government, corporate intrests or any foolish flag or symbol. My allegience is to the PEOPLE of this country.

It seems unfortunate that the least important element -- allegiance to the flag -- comes first, while the most important part -- liberty and justice for all -- sounds like an afterthought. Personally I prefer to pledge my allegiance to the Constitution.

Ew gross no. The pledge of allegiance just takes up time. I understand people like to be symbolic and pretend like they like the country. But they can do that some other way than making people stand. Andddd....I'm pretty positive not everyone here believes they're under God. It's just annoying. Basically.

Nope, there are three religions I can think of off the top of my head who refuse to pledge to the flag, since they beleive it would constitute the worship of a flase idol.
And, we are obviously far from indivisible, you say so yourself.
The liberty and justice for all is an ideal that I can definitely get behind, however.

YES! it's a beautiful ideal and as a country we've lost so much but with ideals like the Pledge we don't loose hope.

Our government does not hold true to the ideals our founding fathers worked so hard to push forward. There is not liberty or justice for all. Not by a long shot.
