if you have feelings that you've blocked off because you dont want to feel them or be hurt by them and you sort of build a wall between yourself and your emotions, can it have a lasting effect and can it end up hurting u anymore? and can people tell if like someone is smiling but inside they are crying?

The answer to your first question would definitely be yes. The blocked off feelings or memories aren't gone they are just represses (or suppressed), you still have them but you aren't expressly conscious of them. They still affect the way you interact with your environment and usually display themselves through defense mechanisms like projection. If these feelings aren't resolved then they can have a long lasting (but not necessarily immediate) effect.

Your second question depends a lot on who is crying and who is observing. Some people are very good at hiding their emotions, others aren't so good. There are people that are very good at reading the emotions of others. Also there is the added factor that as a relationship becomes more developed emotions are more easily perceived because personal nuances are more easily recognised.

Sometimes people that block their true feelings or true self are the most convincing personalities in the world. It is sometimes easy to tell them someone is crying inside when they are smiling on the outside, and sometimes it is next to impossible. It is using very hard, because repression is often an automatic response and not one you have to think about, per say.

What you are doing is called a defense mechanism, namely, repression.

Holding in feelings of insecurity, depression, anger, or things of the like sometimes will have no effect other than to cut you off from emotion, however this will likely cause you to have trouble forming friendships or romantic relationship with others.
It could also lead to severe anxiety, which down the road could have physical implications, such as IBS, or stomach ulcers.
These feelings could also manifest themselves in outbursts which may cause violence toward others, or yourself.

With these things in mind, it is a good idea to talk to someone about these feelings that you are blocking off, or these past experiences that cause these feelings. this could be a trusted friend, family member, or a good therapist. You could even write your feelings down in a diary.

You can block yourself off from your emotions but eventually they will find you and they will carry on hurting you, that is until you find the courage to turn around and face them. You need to pin-point the reason you are hiding from yourself and try to deal with it as best you can. Try talking to someone close, a friend or realtive, even just talking about these feelings could help. I can't say about the smiling thing hun, only you can answer that, but a rough guess I would probably say so. Talk to someone, lol.
