Man's best appears in both ways...relative to what is best for him...so your choice is both and maybe you just not call it by your own words: idealist or realists. You can't say when it shall affects you or shall come to place in your life. But in reality all you do on earth is reality or else we may give you an adjective not normal in sense.

However, ideology is not idealist. Ideology is a systems belief and it differ with other so many systems belief. Idealism is pertinent to the highest level of right thing to do. Idealism is in essence cannot be considered wrong, for it is ideal. While Ideology is possible be considered wrong to others that belongs to other type of ideology. Do you agree...friend?

I'd say idealists at our best, but part of being a realist is that you have to sometimes pander to the ignorant masses.

Sometimes it not even really pandering, but devising an intermediary step between a situation as it is now and the proposed idea goal.

At our best we are pragmatists.

But if I had to pick between idealists or realists, I would pick realists (and drop the "pandering" part).

Everyone wants to be loved, so we all "pander" to our audiences. We do what is expected, we give them what they want.

Generally people are too hard on politicians for "pandering", but there is a line that some politicians cross.

I really don't know where ideals enter into any of this. Maybe I'm too cynical, or too realistic. There's not much difference between cynicism and realism, in my view.

Libs: idealists

Cons: realists

Has always been that way although realism doesn't have to be pandered. That is only a neccessity of idealism.

Whether we are at our best would be determined by the quality of our ideals.

Bad ideals (e.g. those of Hitler, Stalin) make for bad results.

Good and/or great ideals can illustrate us at our best. With great ideals, we can shape reality to conform or evolve to those ideals, bringing larger and larger segments of the population to affirm such ideals.

I need to know whom you mean by 'we.' Since this is a political question, are you referring to a certain voting block, political party, or something else?
