Just for the fun of it, a member of our research group, who is a transportation fan, found some information about your question. Street railways were built in a number of U.S. and European cities during the 1840s to the1870s, but the streetcars were first pulled by horses and then powered by small steam boilers in one end of the car.

Gradually, advances by Edison, Westinghouse and Thompson were pooled together and electric motor applications were used in the car during the 1880s. Once electric traction was available it became really popular and the streetcars lasted a long time. Most systems in the U.S. were torn out in the 1950s.
