He will not win 17 games in 2008. Whoever said that is out of their mind. If he stays healthy, which is a big if at his age, I'd say he'll maybe go 12-10/13-11 with an ERA in the 4.20-4.50 range. The Red Sox don't need him to be an ace though. They already have Beckett, Dice-K and Wakefield coming back. Greg Maddux got $10 mill from San Diego and while it pains me to say it, Schilling is probably better than he is. Nobody will know if he's worth the $8 mill till next year though.

well going by baseballs standards the red sox got a deal. Schilling is worth that with the big time playoff games he wins. Also greg maddux just got 10 million. Who would you want pitching a big game, maddux is great but schilling has won the world series a few times.

Yes, there is no question about it.
Look at his career numbers. If he stays healthy you know you will get at least 15-17 wins out of him and if it goes to the post season he is almost automatic. He has the best numbers of ANY PITCHER EVER in the post season (11-2) and has NEVER lost an elimination game. Who else is on the market that that can be said about? Are they only asking $8 million? I doubt it.
Look at Maddux: $10 Million.
EDIT: 15-17 wins is totally feasible for Schilling. Look at Wakefield, he has 17 this year. Schilling had 9 wins this year and spent almost 8 weeks on the DL, and alot of his losses were by 1 run in low scoring games; not to mention the 2 games Gagne blew for him.

Of course not! No one in baseball is worth the money they get. As a matter of fact no one in sports is worth the kind of money that gets thrown around.
Hey, look at the up side, at a million bucks a win (can't imagine Schilling winning any more than that) it's still a better deal than the Yankees got with Roger Clemens!!

Yes, he probably is. He's still a good pitcher and will give you 25 games. He's also a strong clutch pitcher during the playoffs. Pitching is still a premium and Schilling is a steady pitcher eventhough he's old as ----.
He also blows a lot of hot air, but that's part of his appeal - it gets the clubhouse going. Personally I think the Sox got a pretty good deal and I'm not a Sox fan.

Its a bargain in today's market. If L-rod is worth 35 Million per anything goes.

Absolutely he is. For 1 year deal contigent upon a physical, for a pitcher that is 11-2 lifetime in the post season and can still fool people with pure command instead of power.

No for 9 wins and all of the crazy incentives the Sox offered to him.

no. When he named the Indians as a team he would be interested in, I prayed Shapiro would stay away although I pretty much knew the Indians would not take the bait on that one. Let Boston have the billion dollar payroll and then say they are not like the Yankees. Yea, whatever.

If it takes a walker for him to go out on the mound and win start after postseason start, then I'm sure the Red Sox will oblige.
