Ornithorhynchus anatinus' endemic population is healthiest in regions like Tasmania and other island lakes and streams. They are are found in streams on the mainland but urban development and agriculture has taken a toll on their habitat. They are listed as of least concern but are on Australia's 'RED LIST'. As of 1999 Lake Pedder, a sub-alpine lake in Tasmania, had about 4000 individuals. However reliable information is still needed on population size over their entire range.

"...local changes and fragmentation of distribution due to human modification of its habitat are documented. Its current and historical abundance, however, is less well known and it has probably declined in numbers, although still being considered as common over most of its current range." "Field Biology of the Platypus (Ornithorhynchus Anatinus): Historical and Current Perspectives". Philosophical Transactions: Biological Sciences T.G. Grant and P. D. Temple-Smith
