I read a lot of Stephen King back in the day. There was this one short story by him that I swear I read, but can't find anymore.

What I remember about it was that this guy and someone else (I think) are driving, but their radio gets all weird, and then there are these flying creatures like pterodactyls or something. The people from the car end up taking refuge in this supermarket or some kind of store. Can't remember exactly what happens then, but then at the end, I think they run back out to the car and drive away, and they figure out these things are from another dimention that has opened up on earth or something.

That's kind of vague and maybe I got some stories smooshed together, but does anybody know what story this is? I think it's from one the first couple of King's short story collections.

THE MIST! Oh man, its a great story. Possibly my favorite of King's short stories. It doesnt play out exactly as you stated, but I have read almost everything by King and there is nothing closer to that then the Mist. It is the first short story in the book Skeleton Crew and is 133 pages long. My favorite book!

its the mist...
The morning after a violent thunderstorm, a thick unnatural mist rapidly spreads across the small town of Bridgton, Maine, reducing visibility to near-zero and concealing numerous species of bizarre creatures; vaguely resembling, among other things, lobsters, spiders and giant squid, these entities viciously attack any human who ventures out into the open. The source of the fog and its inhabitants is never revealed, but strong allusions are made to an interdimensional rift caused by something known second-hand to the townsfolk as "The Arrowhead Project", which had been long-rumored to be conducted at a nearby top-secret military facility.

The bulk of the story details the plight of a large group of people who become trapped while shopping in the town supermarket, among them an artist named David Drayton (the story's narrator), Drayton's young son Billy, and their annoying neighbor Brenton Norton. Also trapped in the market are a young woman named Amanda Dumfries and two soldiers from The Arrowhead Project; the soldiers' joint suicide lends some credence to the theory of the Project being the source of the disaster. Along with the horrifying physical threat outside, of which Norton is an early victim, the story also explores the rapid psychological breakdown of the terrified people inside the market. This breakdown allows for the rise to power of a religious zealot named Mrs. Carmody, who eventually convinces a majority fraction of the survivors that these events fulfill the biblical prophecy of the end times, and that a human sacrifice must be made to clear away the Mist: Billy and Amanda are the chosen victims. As the mob surges forward at her command, Mrs. Carmody is shot by Ollie Weeks, an employee of the market and one of the few survivors who has remained relatively sane. Placing faith on the hypothesis that the creatures hunt primarily by smell, Drayton, his son, and two other survivors escape to Drayton's car. This educated guess proves correct when the survivors are ignored once shut within the car. Learning that the Mist has spread ahead of them across all of Maine, they prepare to drive on into an uncertain future as the story ends.

The Mist....which several people have answered for you. ****More importantly, it has been made into a theatrical release and is due to come out relatively soon.

-Hope it can live up to the short-story though!!!
