I live in Austin, TX and there are a LOT of homeless people I see everyday. You can tell the people who really need the money and occasionally I'll give a buck here and there. But for the most part I don't. Most homeless people choose to stay that way, I mean come on they are getting free money. I don't like when they make you feel bad that they should get some of your hard earned money either. I work hard for what little I have, why should I give it to them for free?

I find it funny that people who are on their feet and aren't under the grapples of substance abuse and etc., can say, "get a job." Who do you know that hires homeless people? With no address, no stability and who are usually in a state of dementia of some sort from not eating. I usually give it if I have something. What they do with it is on them, who am I to assume that all homeless people are drug addicts and alcoholics? Thats the problem with us, we hate poor people and always assume that their situation is 100% their fault and 100% up to them to get out of it. While agree some people are where they are at because of the choices they make, I also think they are a chance for the more fortunate to show compassion without judgment. Just as their are people who take the money and spend it badly, their are plenty that take it and eat and try to survive. So I've concluded that I can't judge. Here's two dollars, what you decide to do with it is not my responsibility. I think people use it to bypass the contempt they hold for the poor. And its true a lot of "christians adopt this philosophy--usually right winged though so I guess that explains it. But thats my opinion...great question by the way.

No you mustn't experience responsible. in case you supply somebody money as quickly as, then shouldn't you do this for each guy or woman who asks for some money? If confident, then you may be giving quite some folk money, and it may be wayyy to high priced. Why might you supply some to a particular guy or woman, yet not yet another? I say... supply money to each and all of the homeless that ask each and every time, or do not supply any money to every physique each and all of the each and all of the time. Edit: think of roughly it. You get asked distinctive situations an afternoon, and whether you in basic terms supply them like $a million, and you probably did it in basic terms as quickly as an afternoon. this is around $3 hundred-4 hundred a twelve months... it quite is alot for every physique with money problems. and you will possibly nonetheless be declining human beings's requests for money. So... you're helping one homeless guy or woman quite daily, declining like 5 or greater different homeless human beings, and you're dropping $3 hundred-4 hundred a twelve months by potential of particularly helping human beings... would not sound nicely worth it to me.

The worst part of living there was seeing all the homeless people. It is like the medieval days. And the utter callousness of your citizens in their treatment of them. Good lord. I got roped into teaching a class once at a Christian School as a reliever. I told the children that if they saw a homeless person outside of a supermarket that their Jesus would like it if they bought the person a banana or something to eat. Needless to say I was fired the very next day. Seems like Christians don't like the homeless anymore than the rest of the Americans. I am so glad to be where I am now. If someone needs help they get it.

I've always been taught to help out those who are less fortunate than I. I am a giver, BUT.............I have worked my whole life and don't understand why someone else can't. If they have emotional or mental instability there are places they can go get the correct help. If they have an addiction they cannot beat there are places they can go to learn to beat them. If they are hungry there are places they can go and get a nice hot meal. They can even get a free cot just by asking at the local shelter.
I think giving them money just gives them more of an excuse to stay in the situation they are in.
But come the holidays and I'm super cheery and feeling bad for those less fortunate I will give a buck or two.
Otherwise they need to either get their stuff together and get a job!!!

Do people realize that there are homeless people that are hard workers and are not drunks or on drugs? Some people have no home due to circumstances they can't control.

I have not given cash, but I have volunteered time to help with things needed at the shelters.

A homeless kid once bought ME a cup of coffee when I stopped to talk to him. Yes, I give money when I'm not broke myself.

Edit: Little Monkey- He was selling the Big Issue :-)
For people who don't know lot's of homeless people try to help themselves by selling a magazine (In the U.K it's called the Big Issue) that addresses social concerns (including homelessness) and they receive a percentage of the proceeds from what they sell. They are trying to lift themselves out of their situation and contrary to the ignorant belief they are NOT all dickheads and drunks.
Cheers.

Many times this money will just go to buying drugs or booz (sp?). I'd say it would be wiser to give them food, blankets, coats, etc.. But if you know for a fact that the person is trying to get back on their feet and earn an honest dollar, sure, help them out.

they use it for drugs! most of them anyways.. thats probably how they got there in the first place.. if not they would make an effort to stay in school and make something of themselves.. instead of doing drugs.. and spending there well earnd money on it.. and going to work high.. probably how they lost there jobs.. and i mean theres always mc-donalds that hiers.. so they could have applied there and rented appartment with someone.. i bet it would of worked.. and theres also welfare.. people have choices, and people choose to either do better with what they got and make it work, or choose to not do better and give up.. if u try u will get what u want and where u need to go!
