In my opinion, a good game must have: 1) A diverse setting that is pleasant (i.e., one that doesn't depress me to the point of suicide--half life 2, bioshock, etc.) 2) Well-developed characters, 3) A plot that has substance (i.e., not the world is threatened by the evil forces of _____ and _____ must save it). Of course, there are many good games that follow this format, but are character driven and htus entertaining (e.g., almost any Final Fantasy game). 4) Managble, usable gameplay and interface.

Just to add examples of good games that could've been perfect had they contained all of the following:
1. Oblivion: Great, diverse setting and gameplay, but no plot or characterization.
2. Halo 2 and Bioshock: Great gameplay but boring plot, no characterization and depressing, homogenous setting

Im not sure if this is up your alley or not.
DOMINIONS 3
Its made by 2 guys, one programmer and one that teaches religio mythology. Its a super deep strategy game with nations that are all based on various mythologies. There are something like 60 nations and they are far from feeling like the same pieces just wearing different uniform colors. They are all very unique and you can find one that fits your playing style (armored, magic, stealth, defensive, horde, whatever). You play their god which is kindof interesting because you give orders but dont directly move the pieces in combat. And sometimes they dont do what you told them to (tho they do tend to have a good reason to change orders)

I have had many games of the same price range that I enjoyed but deleted about a month later. Dominions 2 lasted for years on my machines and this one looks like it will survive longer than that. It takes almost a year just to try out all of the nations and understand them well enough to know which is your personal power-nation. (then you can go online and play multiplayer).

You didnt mention which OS but it supports Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its gotten alot of awards and great reviews but I HIGHLY recommend getting the demo before buying it. Its not a game that everyone can get into. This is NOT your daddys chess game and also not going to be popular with the console-game crowd. (oh yeah, and it comes with a 300 page manual!)

I recently came across a pretty rad game.. I don't know how familiar you are with the Diablo games, but the story line was pretty rockin' in those games as well as the character development. All that being said, the creators of Diablo have come out with Hell Gate: London, its pretty much brand new, but I've been playing it since launch a couple days ago and it is badass with a capital B. It combines FPS elements with RPG elements in a way I've never seen before. Very unique and pleasingly original dungeon content, along with dynamic "instances" for optimal connection speed in multiplayer play. Try it out. :)

No question about it, the original Thief game...
If you can find a copy of this, I highly recommend you do... I look for the same kinda thing in a game as you mentioned...
and this is an absolute classic...

Since thief: the dark project, nothing has come along that satisfied me more in terms of gameplay/storyline/characters. The sequels aren't bad either. :)

could no longer get into KOTOR??????????????? it somewhat is like asserting you do in contrast to boobs or chiseled abs. first of all i think of you're able to reserve judgment on a game till you get a minimum of midway by using it. Kotor and Kotor 2 have extra intensity to character progression than ninety% of all video games so provide them a huge gamble. besides while you're desperate to thumb down kotor (that's insane) there are a myriad of different video games on your aim variety. the fire brand video games are very character pushed even nonetheless they are RTSes. MegamanX command venture is a old yet solid one. Oh and memories of symphonia is taken into consideration one of the final suggestion I surely have for you (it somewhat is even nonetheless eighty hours long)
