I am asking fathers in particular because even after forty years of women's lib, there is still a marked division in what is thought of a men's wortk and women's work.

My dad builds houses and he use to get me to help him around the job site. I learned how to paint and caulk every room you can imagine. I can also use a hammer (properly) and can do odd random jobs with confidence.

Meaning - when I need to make some repairs or additions/modifications to my apartment I can go to the hardware store with confidence. I also know when someone is trying to rip me off by telling me "more work needs to get done" than actually has to. Quite empowering.

I'm answering this even though it's not directed towards me -

Why are you asking only fathers? If these are basic skills a woman needs, mothers should know how to do them just as well as fathers.
