If you search you can find fairly reasonable tickets for one of the three NYC-area airports to O'Hare or possibly Midway. Use Orbitz and put "NYC" instead of a particular airport. Usually LaGuardia has the most Chicago flights, and you can take a public bus from the upper west side to get there.

Plane or car. I would -not- recommend the train, as they are having more and more breakdowns as more and more of their funding is being cut, and the Greyhound Bus is a physical manifestation of Evil on the face of this Earth. *lol*
