Some school districts in the country do require uniforms in certain schools. In some communities, it is the choice of the individual school as well. I think uniforms should be a requirement through at least jr. high/middle school.
I know a lot of people say that uniforms detract from individualism or smack of fascism, but that's not the reason for them. These days it's to help protect them and put the focus back on learning. Individualism is NOT cultivated in what a kid wears, but in the quality of their thinking and their ability to use their minds in solving problems, interpreting information and the ability to express their thoughts. The simple fact is, if people can't think critically for themselves, then fascism can flourish with even amongst the most fashionably dressed people.
I think the protection part works on a lot of levels. In many urban schools, uniforms have proven to cut down on gang-related issues in schools which improves campus safety for everyone. It cuts down on the opportunities to make class/economic distinctions between the haves and have-nots which works two ways - kids don't have to worry about staying on top of the fashion game and don't have to feel with feelings of envy or inadequacy if they're not so well off-- and it lets teachers focus on their jobs. Lastly, it helps take away one of the excuses from the creeps who prey on kids & teens who say "the way he/she's provocatively dressed, how was I supposed to know so and so wasn't 18?"

Some public schools do require uniforms. Basically the uniform is dark apnts or skirt with a specific color blouse or polo. Around here it is usually white or blue.
Uniforms do tend to level the playing field and remind students that there is a set of behaviors that go with the uniform. When they go home and take them off they revert back to "normal" mode.

some public schools do required uniforms. It is voting on by the local school system. Yes the uniforms make life a lot easier- financially for parents first off and well it keeps a lot of the distraction down for those students who are not dressed appropriately. :-)

Some public schools to enforce a uniform policy.
In South Louisiana, I know that many parishes enforce uniform rules. Sure did make my high school years easy on what I wanted to wear to school.
You need to go to the school board or school district and complain about it. Get a group of parents who feel the same way and blow it out of proportion.

My old school is a public school and they require the kids to wear uniforms now.
The school had about 2000 kids and just imagine high school girls and boys and what they wear.
You should get with a committee of other parents and address the issue to the school board, that's what happened with my old school.
Needless to say, it worked.
Good luck!

Where I live, they are starting to make kids wear uniforms to school. They made the elementary and middle school kids start wearing them this year, and next year, they will make the high school kids wear them. I live in a big city and this is just one school district though.

i think in some states its being forced. in our town only the junior highchoolers were required to wear uniforms. now this year my daughter started 6th grade and she has to wear a uniform. it was alot better than to have all my girls fight over who had what. but the down fall was that there's hardly any uniforms to buy. the stores werent ready for this or what but it was hard for her to find the right colors and the size. no red, blue, black shirts of any shade. and only khaki and navy blue slacks. no jackets but only a grey sweatshirt, no hood. what also gets me is that they dont have lockers, so they had to carry all thier books, sweatshirt, and thier bookbags. talk about strict.

These days most public schools DO have to wear uniforms. They may not be the ones that you see the catholic and private schools wearing, but they are more than likely a navy blue sweater and khaki pants or for the girls a khaki jumper. Target actually sells these clothes.

Many schools public do use uniforms and with great results. You don't have girls dressing like whores from the 5th grade on, and they don't feel such pressure to all have designer labels. I lived in Alhambra, California and it worked awesome there, especially limiting the amount of gang related clothing that could be worn.

i thin kit isnt right etiher and i am still i nschool in public schools the kids judge you by what you wear and tihin it is ridiculous! so many people get put down everyday for what they wear if it isnt in style. Noone anymore is allowed ot be their own individual self they have to "fit in"with everyone else! i agree with what you are saying!
