Just heard on the news that plans have been unveiled for the closure of 65 post office branches in the north west and on the tv they're promoting the post office so what's the point on promoting post offices when they're getting shut down? Pretty stupid really...

There are literally thousands of branches in the US. The closure of 65 small offices is not an indication that "all getting closed down".

Its not just proportional to the closures, but most firms will advertise massively prior to imminent closure. Some firms claim this cost back from the government, others use last minuet credit facilities they may have with their banks, that in the knowledge they wont be paying it back anyway. Others just do it as a publicity stunt to back up their planed closure of certain outlets, stating, they have failed to increase takings, even following an advertisement campaign. So you see, its a very complex question. That to given your simply not sure what ulterior motives are lying behind their so-called expanding business.

I've suspected for some years now that US Postal Service is in great trouble financially and in many other ways, primarily due to fact that the competetion from UPS and FedEX alone could never allow them to be any faster then they already are...

It's just occurred to me that it was always expected (I guess) for postal staff to be slow. Remember jokes up to couple of years back? But with the advent of thousands (if not millions) of small and mid-sized businesses in these two last decades, there was no way but to grow for UPS and similar companies.

I knew US Post was in trouble as soon as they started to sell so many things, from drinking cups to teddy bears, to Elvis-related memorabilia, etc.

Something which helped a bit was the money orders, and now the passports. But still_and unless something is done quickly_US postal service will be very limited in the near future...Couple months back I heard that mail boxes will be a thing of the past, and many of them have been removed from my city already.

These are the same people who raised the cost of mailing a letter when e-mail is free. We're not talking about rocket scientists! LOL
