I'm wondering this because I am Chinese and I know of people who get offended when they are called Japanese. I already know that for instance, there are alot of Asian cultures. Some that fall into this catagory are: Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Canton, etc... But why specifically do Chinese people get offended?

i think you are referring to china people right?

majority of the china people are still very angry with what japanese had done during WWII, especially the Nanjing Massacre. there are also another two controversies which made chinese and korean hate the japanese so much. 1) the distortion of japanese history textbook. 2) the Yasukuni Shrine visits by the prime ministers of japanese.

pro-china chinese are also deeply affected by this. therefore i think if you mistaken the chinese as korean is still not so bad. but if you mistaken them as japanese, they will wallop you.

Because they are not. You cannot lump all Asians into one group of people. There are distinct differences between Chinese and Japanese cultures.

If you were called Canadian, you would promptly correct the individual.

how would anyone know which asian culture you belong to? I'm an American Born Chinese. Both of my parents are Chinese... but honestly unless I told them what cultural background I actually am... how would they know? I have no accent when I speak english, if I told them my last name it may give them a hint of my ancestory but thats about it.

For the same reason frenchman would be offended if you called him an Englishman or how an African-American would get offended if you called them a Nigerian.
It's just ignorance at its core.

Look at your history, China and Japan fought a lot and neither likes each other that well. Most Chinese I've talked to have a strong prejudice against the Japanese.

I don't really know but maybe it's because they are two different nations, i mean I'm American, if someone called me Canadian I would get offended because that's not my origin, it's not who I am.
