What impact do tributaries (that join a river) have on the river?

My results show that generally they make them faster and wider - however why is this?

THE MOST OBVIOUS IMPACT WOULD BE AN INCREASE IN WATER FLOW.

basically, a tributary is simply adding more water to the river, thus, it will increase in size, width, velocity etc.
