This is what I came to realise recently. I cannot describe the feeling, but it is really awful.

I have a neighbour who lived with his parents and his own family. He is the only son and his sisters have since married and shifted away. His wife also bore him a kid.

For years, all of us thought they were a good family. They were friendly to us. We can get along well. They are good neighbours. The old man also appeared friendly and helpful to us.

One fine day, something unspeakable occurred. The old lady suffered a nervous breakdown and was warded. The son is also filing a divorce from his wife.

It seems the grandson of the old man is actually his son. For more than 5 years, no one suspected a thing. Then the cat was led out of the bag and the cover is blown.

This is awful. I have never encounter such a despicable behaviour before. To think this sort of thing can happen? How can this thing be allowed to happen? And to think we thought they were a good family?

They are still a good family, it was the the son's father and wife that erred in judgment. Unfortunately a family has been destroyed by this.

We all have our dirty laundry and I defy you to find a perfect family.

Judge not lest ye be judged. These are the times when your friends and neighbors need you the most. These people are suffering and need comfort.

Good luck.

well that's call freedom, I understand some people can get choked by such things, but basically what happened here is the wife cheated with her husband dad, not really unusual IMO. I mean that she cheated with a guy in another city or with daddy is not really different to my eyes of course for the pour husband and mom that must be harder to accept, but the principle is the same, it's not like dad had sex and got pregnant his own daughter.
best example of a similar story it's LOLITA by Vladimir Nabokov if you haven't read it it's a great book they have also 2 movies one from Stanley Kubrick and the recent one with Jeremy Irons. I know it's not exactly the same situation but it's also a case about a couple and one of them mess around with the daughter when he is not suppose to, and in addition it's a great book and a great film

You are ignorant. Be honest with yourself.

As utterly depraved as it is, this stuff happens, and it happens across demographics. Income, religion, culture, race and region are no barrier to it. This happens in sharia Islam, in mainstream christianity, and in atheism. It happens to all races, all degrees of poverty and wealth.

I personally know a half-dozen victims of incest, and dozens of victims of rape. I know some in church and out of it.

The depravity of humanity is global in scope.

What do you tell a seven year old assault victim? How do you restore innocence, or a sense that the world is safe and people are intrinsically good after something like that?

How can you be a woman and not know that 1 in 4 women are assaulted in their lifetime. Think of yourself and 3 friends... theres a good chance that one of you has been assaulted. Who are you assaulted by? Is it a few crazy wackos that assault thousands? A significant majority of abuses of that sort (~90%) come from a known assailant - a sibling, a parent or grandparent, a friend of the family.

My question to you is how can you live in America and be a woman, and not know those two numbers? (25% and 90%)

EDIT: Allowed to happen? How do you stop it when its such a HUGE stigma to report it? Think about this - if it hasn't happened to you then you cant imagine the effect it has inside of you. Have you been assaulted? If your grandfather (or grandfather in law) did this would be ABLE to report it? What could possibly be done that would be just functional social preventive measure that wont just drive it into hiding but will actually cause it to not happen?

This sort of thing happens because people loose family values, that's why. It is sad that this can happen, it is unbelievable but obviously it is happening now. That is why so many family are so screwed up nowadays, because people along the way loose their values and self-respect and then they do something like this, the ones getting hurt are all of those around them. That is one example we need to learn from and not copy.

I can see how you would be shocked. I don't think you are really asking a question, since nobody would really have an answer for you as to why something like that would happen, but it does happen. My suggestion is to just be there as a friend for the son and his mother. Imagine how they must feel!

All you can do is pray for them. That is a sad thing and the grandmother took it very hard. I hope the younger man can move on with his life after all this mess.......

Welcome to the real world. It sucks. There are a lot of people that lie, steal, beat their wives and children. There are people that you can know for many years and then find out they are someone else.

We all have our skeletons in the closet. Most of them never come to light, but when they do, it can get ugly.
