I own 2000, HRV, which has developed juddering problem, when pulling away from stand still, the dealer says it needs a new clutch, costs £1700! I have heard this is a common and manufacturing problem, Honda knows about it! Cant they deal with my problem?

Before you go spending the money on a new start clutch you should have the fluid in the CVT changed. I've seen too many good parts diagnosed as 'bad' when all that was necessary was to replace the fluid.

What happens is that over time the additives in the transmission fluid become depleated that causes the start clutch to remain engaged which in turn causes the shuttering.

Have the transaxle flushed with new Honda fluid (make sure its the factory fluid for the CVT) and then refilled. I think you'll find that will fix your problem. If you don't have confidence in the dealer, take it some place else; just be sure you use the Honda CVT fluid that will have to be purchased at the dealer or else you'll damage the transmission for sure.
