There was NO ALLIANCE. Union of soviet socialistic republics M E D D L E D in all estern european countries policies. 1956 railroaded Hungary killing over 150000 hungarian resistance fighters. IN 1968 same fate caught up to Chech republic. They got president of Chechoslovakia and threw him in
jail. Nobody could stop 300 million russian from sticking their noses in tiny little sovereign countries.
The Bosnian Crisis of 1908-1909 was caused by the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Austria-Hungary in October, 1908. It increased tensions amongst the Great Powers and led to a controversy between the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary, Russia and Ottoman Empire. It also led to international complications, which for several weeks in early 1909 threatened to end in a general European war and helped sow the seeds for World War I.
So probably the Bosnian Crisis !!!!!!

The Alliance system was originally meant to be a way of preventing war. The idea was that every country would agree to come to the aid of any other country that was attacked, therefore making any potential aggressor think twice.
The Bosnian crisis really was the catalyst that eventually lead to WWI.

I would say that the Alliance system was the main reason for increased tension as it was set up at the time of a major arms race meaning that every country was obtaining more and more arms so they would be able to survive in the event of a war.

GCSE history?? Me to!! lol.

When we have done this my teacher said that aslong as you put good reasons for your answer you could choose either, so I will give you some reasons why both caused tension and then you can choose.

Alliance System:
1. Meant that tensions between opposing countries grew as they became stronger by joining with other coutnries
2. The alliances were secretive, and so it made the other alliance very suspicious and paranoid that their opposition was planning a war on them
3. Meant that if two countries were arguing, then other countries, that were in the original two's alliances were dragged into the argument as well, causing a lot of agression between the Great Powers of Europe (France, Britain, Russia - Triple Entente and Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary - Triple Alliance).

Bosnian Crisis:
Austria-Hungary annexed (took over) Bosnia, but Serbia, who wanted a Slavic Nation were unhappy and asked Russia for help against Austria-Hungary. Germany told Russia that they would declare war on them, if Russia went to war with Austria-Hungary, and Russia were not prepared for war and so backed down. This was important and caused tension as:
1. Russia now knew that war was likely and so began to prepare for war by building up their war machinery, meaning that they were ready to fight in the future.
2. Other countries also saw the possibility of war and so built up their armies.
3. Germany standing up for Austria-Hungary told Austria-Hungary that they had Germany's support to the point of war, and so were more likely to go to war, as they had back up. This is sometimes known as a "blank cheque" from Germany to Austria-Hungary.

These are just a few facts, if you are doing this in school then look through your notes and text book and it will give you loads.

I would probably say that the alliance system was more important, as it caused tension over a longer period of time, but like I said, aslong as you back up your answer you should be fine.

Hope this helped. xx

i did this last year, just explain that the allaince system was more important because that made the tension build up and made some countries be forced into the war. The crisis is not as important because if that hadnt have happened then something else would instead. just imagine that you left the gas on (symbolises bosnia) and there were loads of fires nearby then just because one goes off it just means that it did it before another one had a chance.
