Communism is the doctrine of the conditions of the liberation of the proletariat. The proletariat is that class in society which lives entirely from the sale of its labor and does not draw profit from any kind of capital; whose weal and woe, whose life and death, whose sole existence depends on the demand for labor – hence, on the changing state of business, on the vagaries of unbridled competition. The proletariat, or the class of proletarians, is, in a word, the working class of the 19th century.
There have always been poor and working classes; and the working class have mostly been poor. But there have not always been workers and poor people living under conditions as they are today; in other words, there have not always been proletarians, any more than there has always been free unbridled competitions.
The Proletariat originated in the industrial revolution, which took place in England in the last half of the last (18th) century, and which has since then been repeated in all the civilized countries of the world.
Wikipedia describes:
Communism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. It is usually considered a branch of the broader socialist movement that draws on the various political and intellectual movements that trace their origins back to the work of Karl Marx.
The Communists... are on the one hand, practically, the most advanced and resolute section of the working-class parties of every country, that section which pushes forward all others; on the other hand, theoretically, they have over the great mass of the proletariat the advantage of clearly understanding the lines of march, the conditions, and the ultimate general results of the proletarian movement.
The immediate aim of the Communists is the same as that of all other proletarian parties: formation of the proletariat into a class, overthrow of the bourgeois supremacy, conquest of political power by the proletariat." - Karl Marx, Communist Manifesto, 1848.

Communism is a system of ideas that seek to establish a classless organization. This means that all members are treated "equal". For example, in an economic aspect, property, goods, and their means of productions is commonly owned(shared) by all members.
Karl Marx is an important guy to know. He was the leader of a successful communist movement in Russia, and his theories are what directed this ideology.
Mind you, this is a very general and broad summary. There are so many characteristics! For further information, try checking out the Encarta encyclopedia's article here: http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761572241/Communism.html. Hope this helps!

Communism was a dream. The perfect world where all were equal and working for each other. Put in as much as you can, and only take out what you need. Lenin's ideas did not get a chance because he died so soon after the Revolution. Stalin (self named as the man of steel) came in and stuffed it.

Communism was invented by Karl Marx and put into practice by Lenin. Communists took over the Russian gov't from Tsar Nicholas in the early 20th century. Then, they executed him and his entire family. Communism is a failed means of gov't that cannot sustain itself.
