Ironic really that I watched this film again last night...
But I thought it was good, although it could have been better. The plot had so much potential yet kinda let me down... On the other hand however, as a huge fan of horror movies I know that there are so many rubbish films out there that I can't really say that Gothika is a bad film... just not one of the best.

No offense to fans of the movie, but I thought it was utter crap...and this is coming from someone who normally gets creeped out by horror movies! That's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back from watching that movie when it first came out in theatres. lol
I knew it was bad when I started laughing at the scenes which were supposed to be scary. It should have been a warning sign to me when about 20 minutes into the movie, my friend
turned to me and said "this movie sucks".
The acting was terrible (Penelope Cruz is way better acting in Spanish movies with her native language than in Hollywood flicks), the story was ludicrous, and the ending was a ripoff of "The Sixth Sense". The only good thing about the movie was the title itself.
Trust me, I've seen Winnie The Pooh Halloween movies which were way scarier than this laugh-out-loud piece of garbage. Unless you're a diehard Halle Berry or Penelope Cruz fan, I wouldn't recommend this movie.
If you want a better horror movie, watch the original Halloween or The Fog...or even the Hollywood remake of The Ring.

I loved it. I found the bridge scene in the beginning to be a metaphor for crossing into insanity, from being the psychiatrist, to being the patient. Also, really enjoyed the fit the profile scene where the sheriff (Bob) has the conversation with Miranda (Halle Berry).

I thought it was good but it scared me so much I was hiding behing my pillow for half of it.
Also, when it first came out I wore black all the time and was a bit morbid, so this fat kid at my school used to chase me round yelling "GOTHIKA!". It wasn't very flattering.

I thought it was a slice of niche entertainment. Kassovitz made it in his own unique style, a French auteur's realisation of a slice of American noir and it included a lot of his style such as distorted close ups and uncomfortable cuts. It doesn't make any sense to be a piece of Hollywood cinema because it's entirely devoted to neo-wave French cinema! Thought it was okay though!
