What is the election day today for? Is it to elect the candidates for the politcal parties?

Candidates for political parties have already been selected by the party through caucus or primaries( voted in by party members). On election day all the offices where candidates are selected by voters come up for vote. The voters then make a choice as to who they want to fill the office.
