Dont answer the door. He has no legal right to be bothering you if the rent is up to date. Tell him to communicate only in writing and if he continues to harrass she needs to contact the police.

If she is low-income, she can speak with an attorney at your local legal aid society ... they sometimes handle landlord/tenant disputes. Also, if the $200 has nothing to do with the rent, what is it for? Is it for damages or for a deposit? If it's nothing of that nature and he's just trying to get an extra $200 out of her, have her write a letter to him explaining why she does not feel she owes the $200 and send it both by regular mail and certified mail to document the dispute. Also, in this letter, tell her to request that he stop harrassing her. She needs to make a copy of the letter, document when it was mail by regular mail, and attach a copy of the certified mail receipt. This way, even if he refuses to sign for it, he will still receive a copy.

I find it very odd that a landlord would persistently attempt to collect $200 which 'has nothing to do with the rent'. What DOES it have to do with ? If your mother owes the landlord money for ANY reason, it's irrelevant whether or not it is past due rents.

If he lets himself in the door without permission, he's in violation. If your mother answers the door, he's not, and has every right to attempt to collect what is due to him.

She needs to speak to a lawyer who can easily help her. If she can't afford a lawyer try to see if there are any legal aid groups or tenants regrets groups in the area that assist in this regard. If she feels she is being threatened with harm, call the police. Technically any time one is put in fear of their safety by another it is assault or harassment.

Hi,
You don't say what the $200.00 is for. Does she owe the money? You should call the Landlord to see why he/she keeps stopping by. This way you'll have all your info correct. Then you'll know what direction to go in.... until then you really don't know what is going on.
