no its not an island that is floating away. or even disconnected from the mainland. just a faultline that slides the crust lengthways, its not a constructive plate boundary, just conservative.

Yes and No.
Yes, part of it is moving slowly northwest due to the motion of the pacific plate. The rest of the state is moving slowly southeastward. In about 50 million years the LA area will be up around San Francisco.
No, it's not drifing away from the US. It'll remain part of the US. It IS drifting away from the North American continent, and will eventually become an island that will even later collide with the Asian continent.
On the Cultural side, California is not drifting, but running away from the rest of the US. ;^)

Politically, yes and thank goodness for that! Geographically, I look at it as the rest of North America moving away from us, gradually sinking into backwardness and the Atlantic Ocean.
