Generally your step father is correct. Some may have powerful people as part of them, some may give advice to powerful people but the think tank by itself generally has little or no power.

Think tanks have no power.

It isn't a matter of conservative v. liberal, there are both liberal and conservative think tanks.

Like consultant reports, they are drawn on by those who want to expouse a specific agenda, but the person enabling the agenda is the one who gets power.

When I was 10, I thought my father was the smartest man in the world. When I was 20, I thought he was dumb and knew nothing. When I was 30 I realized I was right when I was 10. He probably knows what he is talking about.

Knowing liberals they usually create their own argument to win, I would assume he did not say that think tanks have no power. You are probably leaving an element out to give your case some strength.

just smile and nod, let him think whatever he wants. he isn't going to listen to anyone younger than he is anyway, much less his "step son"

your opinion probably means very little to him anyway. why do you care what he thinks? i think its irrelevant really.
