I bought a computer on ebay and it says it has an ethernet card. What is it exactly? Do you plug it into the wall or can you access internet anywhere with it or is that just Wi-Fi?
How do you know your computer is capable of having Wi-Fi?
Thanks!

Ethernet the most common type of cabled network connection

Wifi is the most common type of wireless network connection (although it works only within range of a wireless router, not 'anywhere').

You know if a computer is capable if Wifi if:

* The specification says it is
* You've fitted a Wifi adapter
or
* You've examined the hardware and found a Wifi adapter

properly, the changes: frequently Ethernet and TokenRing use TP to transmit as much as 100Mbps and FO is usually for Gbit Eth and 100Mbps Eth, FDDI use Fibber Optic and WiFi is on the spot (electromagnetic wave). Ethernet is a probabilistic protocol, it may transmit to all nodes in its community at any time. TR makes use of the token to go the information between the nodes, that's a deterministic protocol. the common transmission fee of Ethernet by way of UTP is 10/a hundred Mbps and TR is 4/sixteen Mbps. FDDI (Fibber allotted documents Interface), that's a information media that delivery the 2nd layer protocol by way of Fibber. WiFi, in the present day this technologies is accepted in hand held units. Regards.

Ethernet is the trade name for a copper wire system IEEE802.3.
WiFi is the trade name for a wireless system IEEE802.11x

You should get either 802.11g or 802.11n. Either the IEEE designation or the trade name indicates wireless networking capacity. Most computers can be upgraded to WiFi. I like newegg.com You just need the appropriate PCI expansion card.

ethernet card is for High speed hardwire connection ie. dsl or cable (plugin). You more than likely don't have a wireless card installed on that machine. You can buy one cheaply at bestbuy, cicuit city ect, ect.
